Long Description

Avery Dennisonβ„’ FT Y218 is a high-tack, double-coated tissue tape engineered for general-purpose bonding applications. Utilizing a soft, aggressive, and easy-flowing synthetic rubber adhesive, FT Y218 provides excellent performance on a wide range of substrates, including low surface energy materials like polyethylene and polypropylene. Its versatile design makes it ideal for foam and fiber bonding, insulation, and splicing applications in industries such as automotive, construction, HVAC, and general assembly.

Key Features

Extremely High Tack Adhesive: Offers strong and immediate bonding capabilities, even on challenging low-energy surfaces.

Low-Density, Open Tissue Carrier: Delivers excellent conformability and flexibility, ensuring reliable performance on irregular or contoured surfaces.

Easy Release Liner: The white glassine liner promotes smooth handling, converting, and die-cutting processes, and facilitates easy removal at the point of application.

Benefits

Strong Initial Adhesion: Bonds quickly and effectively to a wide variety of surfaces including metals, plastics, foams, and painted substrates.

High Conformability: The open tissue carrier adapts easily to curves, textures, and complex surfaces, while still maintaining a strong anchor to low-density foams.

User-Friendly Application: The easy-release liner allows for hassle-free removal and positioning during application, making it well-suited for both manual and automated processes.

Construction Details

Liner: White glassine (thickness: 67 Β΅m / 0.067 mm)

Adhesive: Permanent synthetic rubber (both sides of the tissue carrier)

Carrier: Low-density tissue

Total Thickness (with liner): 157 Β΅m / 0.157 mm

Adhesive Performance (Typical Values)

Peel Adhesion (ASTM D3330 – 180Β° @ Room Temp):

Substrate20 Min Dwell24 Hr Dwell
Stainless Steel680 N/m715 N/m
Polycarbonate650 N/m660 N/m
Painted Steel680 N/m685 N/m

Loop Tack (ASTM D6195):

Glass (Initial): 1250 N/m β€” indicating very strong quick-stick capability.

Static Shear (ASTM D3654):

Stainless Steel (1”², 1000g @ RT): > 3000 minutes β€” demonstrating excellent holding power under sustained load.

Temperature Resistance

Minimum Application Temperature: 50 Β°F (10 Β°C)

Service Temperature Range: -40 Β°F to 140 Β°F (-40 Β°C to 60 Β°C)

This makes FT Y218 suitable for both indoor and controlled-environment outdoor applications, where moderate thermal exposure is expected.

Application Techniques

To achieve optimal bond strength:

Ensure bonding surfaces are clean, dry, and free from contaminants such as oil, grease, or dust.

Bonding performance is dependent on adequate adhesive-to-surface contact, which is influenced by the applied pressure, dwell time, and temperature.

Always test on specific substrates under actual application conditions to confirm suitability.

Storage and Shelf Life

FT Y218 maintains its performance characteristics for up to two years when stored in its original packaging at 64–72 Β°F (18–22 Β°C) and 30–70% relative humidity, away from direct sunlight.
